From the full form of the acronym LGBTQIA+ to learning about the community's struggles, here is everything you need to know.

What Is LGBTQ+?

The term LGBTQ+ or LGBTQIA+ is associated with queer people and stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning or queer, intersex and asexual people. The ‘+’ used at the end is meant for other members of the community like agender, genderfluid and more.

Lesbian

The term ‘Lesbian’ is used to identify women who are sexually attracted to other women. From the acronym LGBTQ+, the alphabet ‘L’ was the first one to come to light and was popularly associated with an ancient Greek writer, Sappho.

Gay

The ‘G’ in LGBTQ+ refers to the people who sexually identify themselves as gay and hold romantic interests in people of the same gender. Initially, the term was Urning which was meant for homosexual men but now gay is used for men and women who choose homosexuality.

Bisexual

Karl Heinrich Ulrichs was the first one to use terms like ‘homosexuality’ and ‘bisexual’. The people who are romantically or/and sexually interested in both men and women are referred to as bisexual.

Transgender

The addition of the alphabet ‘T’ to the acronym LGB was done around the year 1990 after a long fight for accepting transgender people into society.

Questioning Or Queer

The recently added alphabet ‘Q’ stands for questioning or queer and is used for individuals who don’t identify as heterosexuals and are still exploring their gender and sexual identities.

Intersex

The ‘I’ is dedicated to the intersex people who possess a natural biological variation in their bodies which is different from the male and female construct.

Asexual

‘A’ in the acronym refers to the individuals who do not hold any romantic or sexual interest in anyone.

Others

The ‘+’ used at the end of the term LGBTQIA is devoted to the remaining members of the community including but not limited to demisexual, graysexual, agender, genderfluid and more.
